Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are voluntary, employee-led communities within an organization, built around a shared diversity identity. For example, an organization may have ERGs built around LGBT+, women, people of color, veteran status, etc. ERGs can foster a sense of community, provide valuable support to employees, and promote greater diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging within the workplace.
ERGs can also be known as affinity groups, employee networks, or business resource groups, depending on the organization, with some organizations using their own terms altogether.
ERGs serve several purposes:
Building community. ERGs provide a safe space for employees with a shared identity or lived experience to connect, share ideas, and support one another.
Providing a platform for advocacy and support. ERGs offer a platform for employees to advocate for the needs and interests of their members, supporting organizational inclusion and belonging efforts through communication and collaboration with leadership.
Developing professional skills. ERGs can provide opportunities for members to develop leadership skills, access mentoring and networking opportunities, and participate in training and development programs.
Making a meaningful impact. ERGs can contribute to the organization's success by providing insights into diverse perspectives, improving employee morale and retention, and enhancing the company's reputation as an inclusive employer.
When organizations empower their ERGs to thrive, they’re not only demonstrating their commitment to cultivating an inclusive, diverse, and equitable workplace—they’re actively investing in the success of their people and their potential to make a meaningful impact.
