4 ways ERGs can help build organizational trust

Few things are as corrosive to a positive workplace experience as lost organizational trust. Defined as the level of positive confidence employees have in their organization and its leadership, organizational trust is a key component of a healthy, productive, and engaged workforce—and can be extremely challenging to rebuild once it’s lost. But not impossible.

Building organizational trust requires an employee-first approach that prioritizes human connection, engagement, and open communication. While there are many avenues to achieve this, few are as effective and potent as employee resource groups (ERGs). As voluntary, employee-led coalitions, ERGs are hubs for employee engagement and represent a unique opportunity for organizational leaders to tap into the heartbeat of workplace experience and culture to better engage employees.

Below are four key ways that ERGs can help build—or rebuild—trust in your organization.

1. Host roundtable discussions with ERG leaders

Roundtable discussions can be a great way to promote open dialogue, providing an opportunity for ERG leaders to share feedback, discuss challenges, and explore possible solutions. Discussions should be facilitated by an experienced leader who can help to direct the conversation and help promote psychological safety for all participants.

2. Communicate the value of ERGs

Communication can be one of the most impactful ways to build trust in an organization. Whether it’s showcasing different ERGs and their activities, spotlighting ERG leaders, or discussing the ways that ERGs add value to the organization, communicating to all employees about ERGs on a regular basis can help to create a greater sense of community and shared values.

3. Partner with ERGs to drive meaningful impact across the organization

ERGs can be powerful strategic partners when it comes to driving workforce transformation and cultural change. As hubs of lived experience, diverse expertise, and high engagement, ERGs can offer a unique advantage when crafting and executing strategic initiatives.

4. Increase executive sponsor visibility and involvement

Executive sponsors play a critical role in the success and sustainability of ERGs. Not only do they help provide guidance and support to the ERG, but they also serve as a symbol of the organization’s support at the highest levels of the business. Increasing the visibility of executive sponsors can go a long way in promoting a greater sense of trust in leadership.
